Steroids, SARMs and Your Erections: What Nobody Tells You Before the Cycle Ends

Home - Sexual Performance Maintenance - Steroids, SARMs and Your Erections: What Nobody Tells You Before the Cycle Ends

Nobody plans for this part. You ran a cycle, or tried a “research chemical” that a Discord group swore was the safer option. The gains came. Then somewhere near the end, or a few weeks after, your erections disappeared. Libido flatlined. Maybe your testicles feel smaller. And now you are reading forum threads at 1am trying to work out whether it is permanent.

Let us set one thing straight first. We are not here to judge what you took. Our job is to explain what is happening and help you get function back.

Quick answer: can steroids or SARMs cause erectile dysfunction?

What is actually happening

When the external supply stops, you drop from very high androgen levels to very low ones, sometimes within days. That crash is what produces the symptoms: erectile dysfunction, no morning erections, low mood, fatigue and reduced drive. A 2026 study in BJU International of recreational bodybuilders seeking help after short cycles found that roughly nine in ten had erectile dysfunction at their first appointment.

How long does it take to recover?

The honest answer is that it varies more than the forums suggest. Reviews of the research describe spontaneous hormonal recovery commonly happening within six to twelve months of stopping, with sexual function improving as hormones normalise. However, a Danish case-control study found some former users still had lower testosterone and hypogonadal symptoms years after stopping, and longer or heavier use is linked with slower or incomplete recovery.

Hormones also tend to recover before sperm production does, which matters if children are on your horizon.

A word on SARMs

What most men do next (and why it can backfire)

Buying sildenafil to paper over it is common too. It can help in the short term, but it treats the symptom while the hormonal picture stays unknown.

What a proper assessment looks like

Step 1: measure, do not guess. A full blood panel including total and free testosterone, LH, FSH, oestradiol, SHBG, prolactin, liver function, lipids and haematocrit tells us where you are in recovery and flags anything that needs urgent attention.

Step 2: look at the whole system. Erections are not only hormonal. Stress, sleep, heavy training and pelvic floor tension all interact with a low-testosterone state, so we assess those too, including point-of-care ultrasound where blood flow needs checking. Our What to Expect page describes the 90-minute initial assessment.

Step 3: a plan that matches your situation. For some men that is monitored recovery with support for the pelvic floor and blood flow while hormones return. For others, where suppression is severe or prolonged, medical treatment to restart the axis is appropriate, and where fertility matters we make sure the right specialist is involved. Our Testosterone & You page explains our approach, and the erectile dysfunction page covers non-drug options such as focused shockwave therapy.

Reassurance

Most men in this position recover meaningful function. The uncertainty is often worse than the biology, and uncertainty shrinks quickly once you have actual numbers in front of you. We have helped plenty of men through this quietly and without lectures.

FAQ

Is ED from steroids permanent?

Usually not, but recovery can take months, and a minority experience longer-lasting suppression. Getting bloods done is the quickest way to know where you stand.

Will a testosterone booster fix it?

No. Herbal boosters do not restore the brain-to-testes signalling that has been suppressed.

Should I tell my GP?

Ideally yes. If that feels difficult, a private assessment is a confidential place to start, and there is more background in our Knowledge Centre.
