Luke’s Story: Getting His Confidence Back After Years of Erectile Dysfunction
After several years of erectile dysfunction, unsuccessful attempts to manage it himself and growing anxiety around a new relationship, Luke decided he needed proper answers.
Tracking progress throughout treatment
Luke completed the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF-5) at key points during his treatment programme.

Trying everything and getting nowhere
Luke was only 32, but he had already been living with erectile dysfunction for several years.
He had spoken to his GP, searched countless websites and tried to find a solution himself.
He had experimented with medication, penis pumps and different masturbation techniques. He had even taken medication prescribed to his father and tried injecting himself.
Looking back, he recognises that trying to manage the problem without appropriate medical advice was not the answer.
The longer it went on, the more it affected him.
Luke was starting a new relationship, but rather than enjoying being close to his partner, he found himself worrying about whether he would be able to achieve an erection.
He became embarrassed about his body and would only feel comfortable being intimate with the lights off.
Eventually, he began avoiding intimacy altogether.
The stress and anxiety were building. His confidence had fallen, and he began to feel less of a man.
What had started as a physical problem was now having a significant impact on his mental health and his relationship.
He spent more and more time looking for answers online, but the constant searching left him increasingly overwhelmed.
“Enough was enough.”
Luke eventually decided he couldn't carry on trying to manage the problem alone.
He wanted to understand what was happening and whether other treatment options were available.
He contacted Male Health Clinic and arranged an initial consultation with Steve.
For Luke, being able to talk openly about his erectile dysfunction was an important part of that first appointment.
He could explain what he had been experiencing, what he had already tried and how much the problem was affecting his life.
Rather than continuing to rely on information he had found online, he now had the opportunity to discuss his concerns with a clinician and agree on a structured way forward.
A personalised three-month programme
Following his initial consultation, Luke undertook six sessions of focused shockwave therapy over a three-month period.
Alongside his clinic appointments, Steve introduced a personalised home programme.
Focused shockwave
Six focused shockwave therapy sessions delivered across the three-month programme.
Home programme
Personalised Kegel and reverse Kegel exercises alongside guidance on penis pump use and masturbation techniques.
Progress reviews
Luke's symptoms and reported erectile function were reviewed throughout the programme using the IIEF-5.
We used the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF-5), a five-question assessment of erectile function, to record his symptoms at the start of treatment and review them again at appointments three and six.
This gave us a consistent way of measuring his reported erectile function alongside the changes Luke was experiencing in his everyday life.
A noticeable change by his third appointment
By Luke's third treatment session, he had started to notice something he hadn't experienced consistently for some time.
His morning erections were returning.
He was also beginning to experience spontaneous erections again.
His IIEF-5 score had increased from 9 at his initial consultation to 16 at his third appointment.
For Luke, these improvements meant more than a change in his symptoms.
He was beginning to feel more confident, and the anxiety that had affected his intimate relationship was starting to ease.
By his sixth and final treatment appointment, Luke reported that his erectile dysfunction symptoms had fully resolved.
His final IIEF-5 score was 23 out of 25.
We discussed a possible six-monthly review to monitor his progress. We do not currently have longer-term follow-up information.
For Luke, the biggest change was the confidence he felt he had regained.
I wish I came to Male Health Clinic sooner to get my life back.
Luke’s advice to other men
When asked what he would say to another man experiencing erectile dysfunction, Luke had a clear message:
“Don't suffer in silence as I did. Don't fall into a downward spiral and be stupid like I was, reading stuff on the internet and trying things out yourself.
“Steve was open, honest and professional throughout and put me at ease. Everything he said, I could relate to.”
Steve’s perspective
What stood out to me about Luke was how much erectile dysfunction had started to affect his life.
He was a young man in a new relationship, but he was becoming increasingly anxious about intimacy. He had spent years trying to find answers and had reached the point of experimenting with medication and injections without medical supervision.
That concerned me.
Medication prescribed to someone else, particularly erectile dysfunction medication, may not be suitable for you. Self-injection without appropriate assessment and training can also carry significant risks.
During Luke's treatment, we monitored his progress using the IIEF-5 and discussed the changes he was experiencing.
By his third appointment, he was reporting the return of morning and spontaneous erections. By the end of the programme, he reported that his symptoms had fully resolved.
His IIEF-5 scores reflected that improvement.
But what mattered just as much to Luke was how he felt about himself.
He had spent years worrying about his erections, avoiding intimacy and questioning his masculinity.
It was particularly encouraging to hear that he was beginning to regain his confidence.
Luke's experience is a reminder that erectile dysfunction isn't simply about whether someone can achieve an erection. It can affect relationships, confidence and mental wellbeing.
It is also important to remember that erectile dysfunction has different underlying causes. Not every man responds to the same treatment, and a proper assessment is necessary to determine which options may be appropriate.
For Luke, seeking specialist advice gave him an opportunity to move away from trying things on his own and towards a structured treatment programme.
One patient’s experience, not a promise of results
Luke received a combined treatment programme that included focused shockwave therapy and a personalised home programme. This case study cannot establish which individual part of that programme was responsible for the changes he reported.
Luke reported that his erectile dysfunction symptoms had fully resolved by his final appointment, and his IIEF-5 score increased from 9/25 to 23/25 during the programme.
Individual outcomes vary. Erectile dysfunction can have different underlying and contributing factors, so assessment is necessary before deciding whether a particular treatment approach is appropriate.
A possible six-monthly review was discussed with Luke, but we do not currently have longer-term follow-up information.
